A couple from Orange escaped serious injury this morning when the pickup truck they were driving and the camper trailer being pulled turned over off Interstate 10.
The accident was about 8:30 Monday morning during rain on the eastbound outside lane past the 16th Street overpass. The truck and trailer flipped on different sides in the muddy grass off the main highway.
Traffic on the interstate was slowed for about 45 minutes as two Gilbeaux’s tow trucks had to turn the vehicles upright and then remove them.
Sergeant Stephanie Davis with the Texas Department of Public Safety said the pickup was driven by 67-year-old Paul Johnson of Orange. He told troopers the trailer began to sway back and forth. He lost control, leading to the pickup and trailer to flip on their sides.
Johnson and his wife were taken by Acadian Ambulance to Baptist Hospital Orange Emergency Room with minor injuries.
Then about 12:30, near the same spot on Interstate 10, five vehicles were involved in a chain reaction crash. No serious injuries were reported and no major damage was seen.
A witness said a pickup truck pulling a storage trailer appeared to have a tire blowout. The truck slowed down to pull off the road and was hit from behind by another pickup truck. After that, other vehicles crossing the 16th Street overpass continued to hit the back of the vehicle in front.
