Lamar University will take to the field Saturday looking to extend a three-game win streak and remain in the Southland Conference title chase. The Cardinals, who moved into to the top 10 for the first time in program history following last Saturday’s victory over Northwestern State, are currently second in the Southland standings just a win back of Stephen F. Austin.
For the Cardinals (4-1/2-0 SLC) to continue their hot start they will have to do it against a squad that has had their number recently. The league’s other Cardinals, UIW, are currently tied for fourth in the conference standings (2-3/1-1 SLC) and has had the upper hand in the series recently. UIW leads the series, 8-4 (.667) all-time, and has won the past six and eight of the last 10 meetings. The last Lamar victory came during the 2018 season when LU blocked a field goal with seconds remaining and returned it 66 yards for the score and the win.
UIW comes to Beaumont looking to erase the outcome of their week 5 matchup in Nacogdoches. San Antonio’s Cardinals fought the league leaders right down the end of the fourth quarter and appeared to tie the game on a two-point conversion only to have the play waived off due to a controversial call.
Saturday’s contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start from Provost Umphrey Stadium. It will also be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 and streamed live in ESPN+.

Series History: Lamar trails, 4-8
LU vs. the Cardinals
The all-time series against San Antonio’s version of the Cardinals has not favored Lamar. Big Red is 4-8 (.333) all-time against UIW and is just .500 at home in the series (3-3). The Cardinals enter Saturday’s contest looking to put an end to a six-game slide – a stretch that has seen Lamar held to 20 or fewer points in each of the past six losses. LU’s last win in the series came back in 2018 when Lamar blocked field goal with seconds remaining and returned it 66 yards for the game-winning score.
Hot Start
Lamar has started the season 4-1 (.800) for the second consecutive year. It marks the 15th time in program history that Big Red has started a new season with at least a 4-1 record. Prior to the 2025 campaign, Lamar had not opened a new season 4-1 since 1974. Among the program’s 4-1, or better, starts, five of them came prior to 1951 when it was still a junior college institution.
Speed Limit 42
Saturday marked the second consecutive week Lamar has scored at least 42 points in a contest. During that stretch, LU is tied with Stephen F. Austin as the league’s top scoring offense.
TOTAL-ly Offensive
Lamar University recorded nearly 500 yards of total offense in Saturday’s victory (250 rushing and 230 passing). The 480 yards of total offense are the most by a Cardinal squad since it hung 493 against the Demons in 2024.
The Rossomando Effect
Since the arrival of head coach Pete Rossomando, Lamar has made historic strides. LU is coming off an NCAA FCS Playoff appearance and is currently in the midst of its best run of success (in terms of consecutive winning seasons) since the mid 1960s. Just four games into his fourth season, Rossomando had already won more games at LU than any previous coach after four full seasons.
