The City of Pinehurst voted Tuesday to drop the speed of several busy streets in the city. City manager Robbie Hood said the addition of the new North Early Learning Center from the West Orange-Cove School District (currently being constructed) will have more kids in the area and near the street, plus there is more foot traffic and bike riders in the city.
“It’s just a matter of safety for our citizens,” he said. “There have been some close calls.” The city is also going to implement the use of safety vests by those on the streets at night, as well as dawn to dusk hours. He also reminded citizens that lights in the front and back of bicycles at night are still required.
As for the speed limits, Strickland will drop from 45 mph to 40 mph. MLK from I-10 to Strickland will drop from 50 to 45 and 35th Street will drop from 30 mph to 25 mph.
Once the new speed limit signs are received and put in place of the existing signs, Police Chief Jason Hollyfield said they will put red flags on them as a visual to let drivers know the speed has changed. He added his officers will be writing warnings during a grace period to give citizens a chance to adjust.
Council also voted to rescind an ordinance that has No Parking curb signs throughout the Camelot addition. Hood said those signs will now be removed.
The city also announced a proposed budget public hearing for Sept. 8 and Mayor Lee Hayes encouraged the citizens to attend.
