Orange City Council met Tuesday morning in regular session and one of the agenda items was to consider a motion approving the updated Chapter 380 Property Tax Rebate Agreement with Cadance Development Partners, LLC, representing THE GROVE retail
project at MLK Drive & IH 10 W in the City of Orange. The agreement changed the wording from a property tax abatement to a property tax rebate, specifying 33% of the 1.5% or 100% of the .5% EDC portion for a period of ten years that the City of Orange receives. Following an explanation from Economic Development Director Jay Trahan (below), council voted to approve the change.
Currently the 35 acre, $42 million capital investment is centered around four anchors (businesses) that include Academy, Burlington, Ross, and Five Below. Other businesses could be announced at a later date.
In other council news, the Orange Fire Department accepted a $5000 Helping Heroes Grant from Invista that Chief John Bilbo said will be used to purchase 24 Guardian Angel Lights that will make firefighters highly visible to others.
Bilbo also announced that Guy Geuder (above) would receive his shield after completing a year of service and he also announced Aaron Leger (center), City of Orange Animal Control Officer, as the local rabies control authority for the City of Orange following the retirement of Andy Borel.
Council also approved spending $150,000 as requested from Deputy CVB Director Divon Williams from the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) reserve fund for the 2026 Orangetober Festival to promote tourism and the hotel industry. The free event is scheduled from Oct. 2-4.
