Before Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh, the Philadelphia Phillies made a bullpen move by selecting the contract of right-hander Lou Trivino from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Unfortunately that meant optioning Bridge City’s Chase Shugart to the minors.
Shugart struggled in his last two outings, surrendering three runs in each appearance. His ERA went from 3.25 to 4.97. He has appeared in 26 games this season, pitching 29 innings.
Manager Don Mattingly said the decision was based more on roster flexibility than recent results. “I know Shugart has given up a couple of homers lately,” Mattingly said. “He’s been really good for us this year. He’s done what we’ve needed in that role, taking the ball whenever we’ve asked. He just happened to be a guy with options, and we needed a fresh arm.”
