On January 9 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman/outfielder Ryan O’Hearn the Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-handed relief pitcher Chase Shugart for assignment.
Designated For Assignment is a roster move where a team removes a player from their 40-man roster, giving them seven days to trade, release, or reassign the player to the minor leagues (outright).
Shugart, 29, was acquired from the Red Sox last offseason. The The Bridge City native made 35 appearances out of the bullpen for Pittsburgh and went 4-3 with a 3.40 ERA while holding opponents to a .206 batting average. He earned his first big-league win on April 22 against the Los Angeles Angels.
Shugart also made 12 appearances with Triple-A Indianapolis and went 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA and one save.
