Tuesday morning the Orange City Council had a decision to make on a new logo for the city. The city’s marketing department narrowed the logo suggestions from a company called Marketing Alliance down to two. Council did not waste much time, picking Option One.
The logo will replace the “small town charm” the city has used for 16 years.
It was also swearing in day as Mayor Larry Spears and new councilman Matt Chandler were sworn in by Judge Jim Sharon Bearden. Both ran unopposed in May. Spears is serving his third term and Chandler is replacing David Bailey who opted not to run for re-election.
The council also had to choose a Mayor Pro-Tem. Despite a no-vote from councilwoman Terry Salter, the rest of the council voted to bring back councilman Paul Burch for another year.
The Economic Development Board had to replace Chandler after moving over to council. Margaret Adams was selected to take that seat over four other applicants, including Scott Coker, Mike Hennigan, Preshawn Henson, and Shane Johns.
Community Development Block Grant money was handed out to eight programs for 2024.
They include:
Greater Orange Area Literacy Services, $6000
Jackson Community Center, $5500
Julie Rogers Gift of Life, $4500
Orange Christian Services, $6000
Meals on Wheels, $6000
Southeast Texas Hospice, $7000
Stable Spirit, $5570
Samaritan Counseling, $6300
Hillary Gravett, assistant EDC Director, was also recognized for receiving her Economic Development Institute certificate for completing the 117 hr. course.
City offices will be closed May 27 for Memorial Day.
