Weekly Fishing Report Week of August 30, 2023
Sam Rayburn
GOOD. Water slightly stained; 88 degrees; 4.20 feet below pool. The fishing will improve as the weather cools. Bass and white bass are schooling on the flats. Bass are good with topwaters in the pencil grass and hydrilla. Bigger bass are on points and humps biting crankbaits and Carolina rigs. Crappie and bluegill are stacking up on brush in 16-22 feet of water biting on minnows or jigs. Catfish are good around the brush piles, and points in the creek channels 12-24 feet of water. Toledo Bend
FAIR. Water clear; 90-92 degrees; 3.16 feet below pool. First rain in two months has improved the fishing a touch. Giant 15-25 mph winds are keeping anglers off the main lake. Target bass in the pockets and coves with Texas rig worms 9-15 feet of water. In the next few weeks shad should start moving into the creeks, with the gamefish following in pursuit. No report on crappie or catfish. Despite the rain there are still many fires, so be mindful and careful. Report by Stephen Johnston, Johnston Fishing.
SALTWATER
Sabine Lake
GOOD. 90 degrees. Rigs off the beach holding limits of trout using live croaker or shrimp on the bottom with Carolina rigs. Triple tails should start showing up in the next week. Topwater trout action is on fire at the ends of the jetties until the sun rises and the sharks move in. Sabine Channel rocks are producing catches of trout, redfish, sheepshead and a few flounder using live shrimp under a popping cork. Trout are good on the banks of Sabine Lake making long drifts with a 1/16 ounce jig head glo chartreuse 5 inch bait. Points and drops in the bayous are holding redfish, trout and flounder in 2-4 feet of water with popping cork and live shrimp. East Pass holding sheepshead, drum, and redfish off the rock piles and shell banks. Neches River continues to hold redfish and trout on the rock piles, shell reefs and buoys with the best bite on outgoing tides. Bolivar
GOOD. 87 degrees. The surf is holding numbers of black drum, sharks, and some big redfish on cut bait or live on the bottom. The gulf side of the North Jetty is holding limits of sheepshead and trout against rocks with an occasional redfish early near the end with a popping cork and shrimp. The wreck has good numbers of trout early on free-lined shrimp or croaker close to rocks. Channel side holding some nice trout close to the rocks and big redfish on the bottom.
