For over two decades, Judge Troy Johnson has served Orange County as Judge of the County Court at Law #2. He has presided over Criminal, Civil, Family Law and Juvenile cases to name a few. He will be retiring at the end of his term in 2024, leaving the seat open.
Local attorney Rodney Townsend has announced his intention to run for Judge of the County Court at Law #2 as a Republican in the March 2024 Primary and the November General Election.
Asked why he is making his announcement so early, Townsend said, “I’m applying for a job. And I’m willing to work and put in the extra time to get that job.”

Rodney Townsend grew up in Bridge City. He was taught the value of hard work from a young age. His father went to work out of high school for Gulf States Utilities at the Sabine Power Plant located in Bridge City. After twenty-five years with GSU, his father started R&D Construction, building residential homes throughout Orange County. His mother worked for Dupont in its accounts payable department before starting her own business, a custom home blueprint design company.
Rodney graduated from Bridge City High School. He was awarded a full athletic scholarship to play football at Brigham Young University. After an injury derailed his football career, he returned to Southeast Texas and graduated from Lamar University. Rodney went on to attend law school at South Texas College of Law in Houston. While still in law school Rodney interned at the Brazoria County District Attorney’s office where he received a third year bar card allowing him to handle cases under the supervision of a licensed attorney.
Upon graduation from law school, Rodney was hired by a nationally recognized firm specializing in civil litigation. He spent the next three years handling cases throughout Texas and in at least half a dozen other states. In 2003, he came back to Orange County and went to work for Barton, Price & McElroy later becoming, Barton, Price, McElroy & Townsend. While there, his practice included civil and criminal litigation as well as estate planning, probating of wills and small business organization. After hurricane “Ike” destroyed the firm’s building, Rodney took a bold step and started his own law practice in Orange. In his 23 year practice, he has stood beside both plaintiffs and defendants in civil matters, represented parties in divorces, custody hearings, criminal cases, probate hearings, drafted Wills, contracts, served as ad litem for minors. He is also a certified mediator. Rodney has mediated over 750 cases for other lawyers. He is appointed by Judges throughout Southeast Texas to serve in that capacity.
Rodney is admitted to practice law in all Courts of the State of Texas, Federal Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas. He is a member of the Orange County Bar Association and the Jefferson County Bar Association. Certified by the Alternative Dispute Resolution Forum as a mediator. He has been selected to the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Rodney has been recognized as the Best Lawyer in Orange by the readers of the Orange Leader. He is a supporter of all Orange County Schools, Special Olympics, Adaptive Sports for Kids, the local Ministerial Alliances, United Way, the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels, and the American Cancer Society to name a few. Rodney is an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, Ducks Unlimited (DU), and the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA).
Rodney is married to Amy Townsend, (Judice) M.D.. She is a physician with her office in Orange County. Together they have one daughter, Alexandria.
