The City of Orange has erected some new signs around the Riverwalk and the Boardwalk Pavilion in downtown in an effort to enforce the city’s leash ordinance. The signs are asking dog owners to please keep their pets on a leash instead of allowing them to run free in public areas of the city.
Animal Control Officer Andy Borel said the problem is citizens allowing their dogs to run free can cause conflicts with other dog owners who have their pets secured. “They’re letting their dogs off the leash just to run and get their energy out and sometimes disturbing other people who have their dogs on the leash,” Borel stated.
The city has put stations along the Boardwalk for owners to dispose of their dogs’ waste which has many thinking it is a “dog park” where the pets are allowed to run free. Borel believes the signs will make it clear that dogs should remain on a leash when being walked in the parks and public areas of the city.
There are five signs erected near the Riverside Pavilion and the Boardwalk across from Lamar State College Orange. Borel indicated, “There’s no specific length for the chain or the leashes need to have on them as long as they’re handled by their owners.”
The City of Pinehurst does have a Dog Park that is free to use for dog owners from all of Orange County. The Dog Park is located on Park Avenue at 33rd Street.
