
Police arrested a man Monday afternoon for firing a pistol toward houses on Burton Avenue. Detectives who watched the shooting at 10th and Burton said the shots created a “mass panic” with a crowd at a corner convenience store as people started running around to avoid being hit.
The officers also arrested the man driving the car the shooter was in. Detective Stephen Ward reported the car sped away from the intersection and would not stop for the officers, even with flashing lights and siren.
Ward said the shooting was at 4:20 p.m. He and West Orange Detective Rob Strause were patroling together and were stopped on 10th Street facing north. They saw a white Ford Taurus pull into the middle of the roadway. A man got out of a back passenger door and fired the gun toward the houses on Burton. Ward counted five shots.
The man then got back in the car. The car turned around and started speeding eastward on Burton. Ward said they followed the car and had on emergency lights and siren. The Taurus even sped through the stop sign at Burton and Sixth Street.
The Taurus pulled into a private drive on Third Street. The officers arrested Quinton D.Chargois of Orange. He faces a state jail felony charge of evading arrest in a motor vehicle.
They also arrested Rashaad Ormon Carter of Lake Charles. He faces a third degree felony of deadly conduct-discharging a firearm. Officers also recovered a .22 caliber pistol found in a back seat pocket.
Both men were taken to the Orange County Jail.

The owner of a pickup truck stolen at the scene of a traffic crash in Louisiana followed the truck into Texas and got the man to stop. Orange police arrested the thief.
Officer Dylan Jinks reported he was notified of the incident at 5:50 a.m. Monday at Exit 875 off Interstate 10 westbound. He said he saw a man standing in the ditch along the north access road.
Another man was pointing at the man in the ditch and said he had stolen hs vehicle.
The owner of a GMC Sierra said he pulled over to help at the scene of a crash. When he got out, another man got in the truck and sped away. Another witness who had stopped got the truck owner inside his vehicle and the followed the truck into Texas, where they got the truck to pull over.
28-year-old Jaime Banuelos Jr. of Mission, Texas, was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and taken to the Orange County Jail.
