The Pinehurst Police Department conducted training for its officers Friday with its Humvee acquired after Tropical Storm Harvey. The flooding made it clear to Pinehurst officials that their first responders needed vehicles that could operate in high water situations.
Lt. Keith Reneau with the Pinehurst Police worked with the Law Enforcement Support Office Program (LESO) to acquire the Humvee and two medium tactical vehicles which will be useful in the event of a natural disaster. The Pinehurst Special Response Team will use the vehicles in an armed suspect situation.
Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer said the training was to get the officers trained in maintenance of the vehicles and the handling of the big vehicles. An obstacle course was setup at the police department’s training facility. Part-time police Officer Mark Grizzaffi was the first to drive the Humvee over the course with Navy reservist Lt. Commander Danny Hammond serving as the spotter and observer during the exercise.
The new vehicles will help Pinehurst be prepared incase of another disaster like Harvey. Hanauer emphasized the vehicles will be available for use by other first responders and law enforcement agencies in Orange County and the surrounding area.
