Pinehurst City Secretary Debbie Cormier was re-appointed to serve another one-year term by the City Council Tuesday evening. Cormier said she is happy serving the citizens of Pinehurst and thrilled to be able to do it for another year. Alderman Dan Mohon believes Pinehurst is blessed to have the services of Cormier. Mohon said she is very professional in keeping all of the city’s records and finances up-to-date, adding Cormier is one of the best people he has dealt with in that area. Cormier has served as the City Secretary of Pinehurst since 2007.
The Pinehurst City Council heard a recap from Fire Chief Shon Branham of the fire that damaged the Dollar Tree store last Wednesday morning. Chief Branham indicated that Fire Marshal Brian Champaign of Emergency Services District Number 1 in Vidor did the initial investigation of the fire and determined the cause. Branham informed the Council the fire was electrical in nature and stated how fortunate fire fighters were that the fire did not occur two hours earlier in which case it could have had time to spread and damage more of the businesses in the shopping center on Strickland Drive. Branham said the Dollar Tree is still closed, but all the other businesses are up and running.
Code Enforcement Officer Harry Vine has inspected the damage to the Dollar Tree and said it will be several weeks before the store will be re-open for business. Vine predicted it would be at least six weeks or maybe longer before the store could reopen since the entrance way was all burned away, the entire structure at the front of the store.
As part of his beautification plan for all of Pinehurst, City Administrator Robbie Hood had city workers give a makeover to the City Hall grounds recently. The lawn was mowed, grounds were weed-eated, and the parking lot was blown off from leaves and debris. Hood said last week city workers, Code Enforcement Officer Harry Vine, and Hood addressed the City Hall itself washing the exterior of the building over three days to remove grime and dirt. Hood commented that preventive maintenance goes a long way. Next to be addressed Hood indicates is the parking lot at the City Hall. Hood stated the parking lot will be re-striped over the next few weeks. He asked the public to have patience as certain areas will be roped off while the stripes are painted. Hood said the parking spaces probably will be enlarged during the restriping, and he hopes the cleaning up of the City Hall will serve as an example for the rest of the city. Hood wants to beautify Pinehurst, and emphasizes it starts right there at the City Hall. Plans are still moving forward according to Hood for improvements to the West Park and the creation of a dog park in Pinehurst.
