Accident Shuts Down Hwy. 62
Orange County deputy Andrew Hollier was injured Tuesday night when the patrol car he was driving collided with pickup truck driven by a pizza delivery man. The collision was about 7:15 p.m. on Highway 62 near Tulane Road. The highway was closed in both directions for several hours. The Texas Department of Public Safety reports both drivers were taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. Friday Filing Deadline For May Election
Pat Pullen filed Wednesday to run for his second three-year term on the Orange City Council. Pullen holds the Single-Member District 1 seat and is so far the only person to file for the position. On Tuesday, local bishop-pastor Charles Ray Thomas filed to run for mayor against city council member Larry Spears. Spears is having to give up his At-Large Position 6 seat because of rules under the city charter. Businessman Paul Burch has filed to run for the at-large seat and has no challengers. OC Commissioners Hold Weekly Court
Orange County Road and Bridge Engineer Clark Slacum was approved Tuesday to get trucks for his department by the Commissioner Court. The trucks will be used to help with continued recovery from Tropical Storm Harvey. The Commissioners decided to go out for bids on three dump trucks and three patch trucks. The decision to go out for bids is hoped to reduce the costs for purchasing the trucks, and the county might be able to award the bids to a local automobile dealership. Arlanxeo To Invest In Area
Arlanxeo plans to invest $19 million on its Chemical Row plant to keep the current level of 289 full-time jobs. Tuesday, the Orange City Council passed a resolution supporting the company applying for a state enterprise project to receive tax incentives for the investment. City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the plant has an annual payroll of $33.4 million that goes into the local economy. Representatives of the plant said Arlanxeo has an average of 200 contract workers in addition to the full-time positions. Named the new baseball coach at West Orange-Stark last summer, Craig Jones is leaving the team before coaching his first game. Jones was named the new head football coach at Kirbyville High School after applying for the job a few weeks ago. Kirbyville was familiar with Jones. He was the assistant baseball coach of the Wildcats before joining the Mustangs. But this will be his first head coaching job in football.
