NEWTON CO. SHERIFF’S REPORT by Sheriff Billy Rowles 04/16/2018 Going to be out of town 3 days this week.  I hope we have a quite week.  Let’s see what’s been going on. Received a call from a lady who said that two people were yelling and honking horns in their driveway at 1:00 a.m. in the morning.  Seems the two families were on Facebook discussing the border wall.  One family , a Clinton supporter, one family a Trump supporter.  One goes to the others home all mad.  Police get involved and all ended well. Coaches Must Be Certified To Teach Tackling

Before next football season begins, football coaches in the high school and junior high ranks will need to be certified in teaching tackling. The University Interscholastic League has said that they and the Texas High School Coaches Association have collaborated to make Texas the first in the country to implement a mandatory statewide tackling certification program for all football coaches to raise standards and improve safety. Building Was Once Perry Bros.

The brick facade of the mid-century modern building on Green Avenue began coming down last week the scent of Maple Nut Goodies, bolts of new gingham and red rubber balls were long gone. But the 1956 building, used for years by Lamar State College-Orange and the local U.S. Representative, was once the home of the popular dime store, Perry Brothers (usually abbreviated Bros.). Gwendolyn "Gwen" Sheffield, age 88, of Orange, Texas, went to her heavenly home surrounded by her loved ones on Thursday, April 12, 2018 in Beaumont, Texas. Services to honor Gwen's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Cornerstone Baptist Church with Brother John Mastrovich officiating. Six Locals Headed To Boston

Six Orange County runners are headed to Boston to run in the 122nd Boston Marathon.  The race is scheduled for Monday, April 16 which is Patriots Day. Bree Fontenot, Brian Bauer, Joe Melanson and Billie Kay Melancon will join Crystal Magee and David Constant.  A runner must meet a qualifying standard for their age division in a previous marathon to qualify for the prestigious invitation. The Mens record is 2:03:02 set in 2011 and the women's record set in 2014 is 2:19:59. Mary L. Lawrence, age 75 of Orange, Texas, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at her home. A graveside service to honor Mary's life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Autumn Oaks Memorial Park in Orange, Texas with Rev. Keith Meyers officiating. Janet Marie Butaud, 61, of Bridge City, passed away on April 13, 2018, in Beaumont. A memorial visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. The Orangefield Bobcats beat West Orange-Stark 5-1 Friday night at Cormier Field in a game heard on KOGT. LHP Johnny Armstrong threw one hit ball for five innings, striking out six.  In the third Armstrong hit Kaleb Istre who was later driven in on a hit by William Robles for the only Mustang run.  Blake Bradley pitched the last two scoreless innings, striking out three and giving up hits to DaQuarious Gipson and Chad Dallas.  WOS left nine on base.
