Tuesday was the first Commissioners Court meeting chaired by new County Judge Dean Crooks since his appointment two weeks ago. Crooks said he is pleased with assuming all the responsibilities of the position as county judge. He was glad to take the gavel from Commissioner Jody Crump, but believes his most important duties lie in the county not in the Commissioners Courtroom. “A lot of the work that gets done is not up here, and that’s what I’ve been focusing on lately,” Crooks indicated. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at King Cemetery in Hartburg with Rev. John Fortenberry officiating. Bobbie was born in Hartburg, Texas on April 22, 1928 to Mary Frances Kelley McCall and James Bronnie McCall. Council Approves Sewage Company Contract
Orange Mayor Jimmy Sims presided at his last city council meeting Tuesday and at the end, choked back tears when he thanked his family. His wife, Kaye, and daughter, Haley, attended the meeting and posed with him for photographs. "Many times I wasn't there (with them) when I should've been," he said. Sims did not run this year for re-election to a third three-year term this year. At the end of the regular meeting, he addressed the council, city staff and audience. The Ed Peveto memorial crawfish boil fundraiser will be held Saturday May 26, 2018 at the Jewel Cormier Park off of 1442 in Orangefield, starting at 1:00pm. There will be a silent, Cajun and highest bidder auction. Crawfish, corn, potatoes and links will be provided. NO drinks are provided, so please bring your own. Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, six Little Cypress-Mauriceville Child Nutrition Employees attended Region 5's “Meal Appeal University,” a hands-on culinary experience with 5 different Chefs. The Chefs taught participants how to work with whole grains, fresh veggies, knife skills and spices and gave them ideas for presentation. LCM schools will be growing fresh herbs for use in meal preparation next year. Orange police are investigating two separate cases of threats made to individuals. One complaint was filed Friday afternoon. A man living in the Little Cypress area went to the police station after getting a second day of threats. The complainant said a man he knows was getting evicted from an apartment. The man being evicted called Thursday and wanted to move in with the complainant, who refused. The evictee threatened to kill the man and his daughter. A second call came on Friday. Kasey Frederick of Nicholls State was named to the First Team All-Southland Conference and Taylor Fraccastoro of SFA was named Second Team catcher. Frederick, the junior from Bridge City, leads her team with a .371 average (fourth in the SLC) and she's first on the team in RBI's with 40. Council Meets Tuesday On Sewage Treatment Contract
The Orange City Council on Tuesday will vote on whether to have a private contractor run the sewage treatment plant for the next five years. The council had a workshop in April about the proposal to have Inframark LLC run the plant. The first year will cost the city $876,000, about the same as what the city pays normally. Four of the sewage treatment plant employees will be offered jobs with Inframark. Three other positions have been held vacant after retirements.
