Deweyville Athletic Director Brandon Prouse announced Brooke Smith and Darin LaVergne as the male and female athlete of the year. Both athletes played and excelled in multiple sports. Also Deweyville’s Holli Shannon, sitting with track coach Hunter Estes, signed with Lipscomb University out of Nashville, Tenn. Shannon was a multi-sport star at Deweyville, specializing in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Shannon qualified for state in the 100, finishing eighth at the 2A Meet. Sixty-five years ago, a tropical wave off the Gulf of Mexico brought days of heavy rain to East Texas. The Sabine River started to rise as the rain drained from the land. Floodwaters moved southward toward Orange. The people decided to fight back with heavy equipment, sand, sweat, and cigarettes. Commissioners Meet Tuesday
The Commissioners Court approved an agreement Tuesday with the Spindletop Center in Beaumont to provide a Mental Health Liaison Deputy for the Orange County Jail. The program which has also been used in the Jefferson County Jail and in Chambers County has been very effective and is 100 percent funded by Spindletop Center. Representatives Amber Woods and Tommy Smith from Spindletop spoke to the Court telling how the program at the Jefferson County Jail helped identify inmates there that had mental health issues. Voting Results In Democratic Runoff
Voting in the Democratic Primary Run-off Election was done Tuesday in four designated locations. The voting locations were the same four locations that were used for early voting: the Orange Public Library; the Mauriceville Volunteer Fire Station; the Public Works Building in Bridge City, and the Raymond Gould Community Center in Vidor. Orange County Elections Administrator Tina Barrow said using just four polling locations was approved by the Orange County Democratic Party and saved about $1500 to do the election. Accident Victims Identified by DPS
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) can confirm that 46-year-old Pedro Jose Soza-Orozco of Groves, was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Rodney Price following a multiple vehicle crash along the eastbound frontage road of Interstate 10. Orozco was the Good Samaritan who stopped to help a stranded motorist.
