A young man who was killed in Austin last week will have funeral services in Bridge City on Thursday. 32-year-old Christian Meroney died outside his South Austin apartment after being shot on July 9. His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Bridge City. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Orange. Survivors include his mother, Becky Meroney and her husband, Jimmy Croaker of Orange. Austin police have arrested and charged 29-year-old Charles Curry, who lived six doors down from Meroney, with murder. On Thanksgiving Day 1953, a 26-year-old reporter from Nashville stood on the stoop of a small, wood-frame house on Orange Avenue and knocked at the door. The couple who lived at the house agreed to talk with him. The story he wrote about them coming back from the dead made worldwide headlines and started him on a long, illustrious career. Tom and Betty Palmer, who lived at 1001 Orange Avenue, went through their days of notoriety and then continued to live at the house until their deaths. On July 15 at 8:54 pm, officers of the Orange Police Department were dispatched to the SunMart Convenience Store at 333 Lutcher Dr. in regards to an Aggravated Robbery. Upon arrival at 8:56 pm, officers met with the clerk who advised that she had been robbed at gunpoint by a black male of an undetermined amount of money. Newton Co Sheriff's Report by Sheriff Billy Rowles Hope everyone had a good week.  Wasn’t too bad around here.  Chief Deputy Hall was on vacation and she was missed.   She does so much, you don’t miss her till she’s gone.   We had several calls where family members assaulted family members.  Drugs and alcohol were involved with most of the calls.  Children witnessed some of these.  Breaks your heart!   We spent time finding a man who dumped garbage in a hunting club.  He said he would clean it up.  $1000.00 fine is he doesn’t.   We received two snake calls … [Read more...] about Newton Co. At approximately 7:15a.m. Saturday, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was notified of an injured woman on the improved shoulder of Highway 12 in Orange County. DPS Troopers responded to the area of Highway 12 and FM 1136 and found an injured woman lying on the westbound shoulder of Highway 12.  At the time, there were no vehicles in the area and no visible crash debris. The 29-year-old Buna woman was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth hospital with serious injuries.
