The Orange City Council approved a deal to trade land along 15th Street at Interstate 10 with a Houston real estate developer. City Economic Development Director Jay Trahan said the developer, Jeff Mallet and Jadco, will make an announcement at a later date concerning businesses that will locate at the site.
The council last week and on Tuesday morning approved abandoning three-fourths of an acre of land that included some handed to the city in the 1950s from the Texas & New Orleans Railroad. The area also includes part of north 15th Street near the interstate.
Trahan said Jadco has the land formerly owned by Transit Mix. Jadco is trading some of that so the city can have new right-of-way to move part of 15th Street. The new 15th street will run on the west side of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks parallel with Bob Hall Road on the east side of the tracks. Currently, 15th curves into 16th Street. 15th Street will go into the future Interstate 10 access road.
The land deal goes with the city’s plan for development along the Interstate 10 corridor. The Texas Department of Transportation is building a new 16th Street overpass and will extend access roads across the railroad tracks. Ever since the interstate was built more than 50 years ago, the access roads ended at the tracks and motorists had to get on the interstate. That meant the travelers by-passed land along the access roads.
