The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears are still alive for a berth in the playoffs after holding on to a 7-6 win over the West Orange-Stark Mustangs Tuesday night at Ronnie Anderson Park. If the Bears can win their final game at home they will force a play-in game with the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks.
The Lee brothers Mitchel and Michael swung the big bats for the Bears. Both hit solo homeruns and each contributed a double that resulted in runs for LC-M. Mitchel also picked up a save striking out the final Mustangs’ batter to secure the victory.
Mitchel doubled with two outs in the first inning and advanced to third when the outfielders had trouble getting the ball back into the infield. He scored on a wild pitch to give LC-M at 1-0 lead.
West Orange-Stark tied the game on a two out single by Ryan Ragsdale in the bottom of the first that scored Payton Robertson who had walked. It would be the Mustangs only hit until the sixth inning.
The Bears would tally solo runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings. Michael drove a pitch over the center field fence in the second. Peyton Choate hit a two-out double that plated Bryce Peasley in fourth. Grant White added another run driving in Drake Trawhon with a double in the fifth.
Down 4-1, the Mustangs rallied in the sixth. Chad Dallas got a leadoff walk off of LC-M starter Slade Green. K. J. Miller, broken hand and all, pinch ran for Chad. Christian Fusilier relieved and Jack Dallas immediately reached on an error. After an infield popup, B. B. Tezeno laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Tre’ Bernard got an infield single to score Miller and keep the bases loaded.
Blake Robinson then slapped a grounder to third that Peasley fielded and threw home for a force out. The throw was low and up the first base line, but catcher White made a sensational catch of the ball to retire Jack Dallas for the second out. Kaleb Ramsey then delivered an opposite field single to right that scored Tezeno and pinch runner Ja’Vonn Ross to tie the game 4-4. Robinson was tagged out trying to steal home to end the inning.
With one out in the top of the seventh Mitchel Lee put the Bears back on top 5-4 with a homerun to deep left center field. White followed with a single and Michael Lee double to center to put runners at second and third. Two runners scored on a grounder by Tyler McCorvey to shortstop that Jack Dallas threw home trying to get the lead runner, but it was low and went to the backstop giving LC-M at 7-4 lead.
Jack nearly made amends in the bottom of seventh when he hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 7-6. Mitchel Lee took over on the mound for the Bears. Ryan Ragsdale reached on an error. Miller pinch ran for Ragsdale and stole second. Tezeno was hit by a pitch. Miller and Tezeno pulled off a double steal to put Tezeno the winning run in scoring position. Lee struck out Bernard to end the game.
West Orange-Stark must travel to Silsbee Friday in the regular season finale. The Tigers were surprised by Hardin-Jefferson Tuesday 12-2 to drop out of a first place tie with Bridge City. Little Cypress-Mauriceville plays the Orangefield Bobcats at Don Gibbens Field Friday. The Bears must win to force a tie with Hardin-Jefferson. That combined with a Mustangs loss to Silsbee would setup the same scenario as last season when the Mustangs, Bears, and Hawks all tied for third place. The Mustangs do have a better record in the games between the three teams so they are automatically in the playoffs. The Bears and Hawks would have a play-in game with the winner then playing West Orange-Stark to determine seed positions.
