The opening game of district Tuesday night in Bridge City saw the two teams that tied for the district crown last year meet. The Silsbee Tigers sent a statement to the Bridge City Cardinals and the rest of the district opponents with a convincing 9-1 romp.
Trevis Sundgren provided the pitching and Chase Partain supplied the bat for the Tigers. Sundgren pitched six strong innings giving up one run on four hits while striking out eight. Partain knocked in five runs going four for five.
Silsbee took the lead early with a run in the first inning. Partain reached on a two-out single to center and scored on Sundgren’s double into the rightfield corner.
The Cardinals tied it in the bottom of the third. Starting pitcher Logan Hamm tripled off the centerfield fence. He scored on a ground out by Justyn Romero to second base that Hunter Palmer made a very nice play on to prevent it being a single.
The big blow for the Tigers came in the fourth and it was done by Partain. Silsbee loaded the bases against Hamm when he bobbled a bunt for an error. Hamm struck out Willie Jones of the Tigers, but then walked Paxton Bryan to force in the go ahead run.
Romero relieved Hamm on the mound and made a fine play on a comebacker to get a force at the plate for the second out. Partain stepped up next and hammered a pitch over the leftfield fence for a grand slam to make the score 6-1. The only hit by the Tigers in the five-run fourth was Partain’s homer.
Bridge City used four pitchers in the loss and all them were touched for at least one run. Silsbee tallied two more in the sixth and one in the seventh on Partain’s fourth hit of the game.
Friday night the Silsbee Tigers return home to play the Orangefield Bobcats who won their district opener. Bridge City goes up Highway 87 to play the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears who also dropped their district opener on Tuesday night.
