The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears have made the playoffs two of the last three years. Entering the 2016 season Coach Randy Crouch feels the football program at LC-M is on the uptick.
This year Coach Crouch has some key offensive players returning from last season. In the offensive line Jim Jones is a senior and back from last year. Senior Luis Zuniga has played for LC-M in the line as well.
The Bears have several good ball carriers back. J’Lon Douglas returns at fullback and Chris Winters will run the football for LC-M. Crouch exclaims, “Our quarterback Beau Bickham is back so we’re excited about those guys.”
Likewise on defense Crouch is counting on some returning starters, but also some new faces to play key roles for the Bears. Winters will play a lot in the defensive secondary as will Trey Guillory at cornerback. At linebacker the coach has Hunter Fontenot and Alex Reed. In the defensive line Jeremiah Armstrong will be returning. Truman Franklin saw a little varsity action last year, and he will see more time this season. Douglas will also be a two-way player. “We have some experience, but also still have some youth there,” analyzes Crouch.
The coach is very pleased with the summer participation from a lot of the players seeking to earn a spot on the varsity. Coach Crouch identifies a couple of those who may be first year starters this season for LC-M. Zach Robin will be an offensive lineman that could help the Bears a great deal. Crouch recognizes, “Michael Davis who was a young man who played some defense and offense for us last year saw a lot of JV playing, but he’s coming up.”
Crouch is optimistic about the Bears chances this season. The practices have been very good. Despite the brutal heat the players have worked through it and showed good efforts. The LC-M coach foresees getting a better read after the players get in pads and have their first scrimmage. Crouch concludes, “Their work habits have been really good, the coaches have done a great job, so I’m excited about that.”
Scrimmages will find the LC-M Bears squaring off against the Coldspring Trojans and the Newton Eagles. The season opens August 26 against the Jasper Bulldogs.
