All the public school districts in Orange County, along with the Deweyville ISD, met standards for the Texas STAAR tests, according to results posted Tuesday by the Texas Education Agency.
However, four individual schools did not meet individual school standards and three of those were in the West Orange-Cove CISD. West Orange-Stark High School, West Orange-Stark Middle School, and West Orange-Stark Elementary School were listed as “need improvement.” Also, Deweyville High School was given a “need improvement” designation.
Schools in Bridge City, Orangefield, Deweyville and Vidor earned distinctions. Bridge City High School earned three distinctions. They were in student achievement for mathematics and science, along with scoring in the top 25 percent for student progress.
Orangefield Junior High earned a distinction for being in the top 25 percent in student progress.
Deweyville Elementary earned a distinction for being in the top 25 percent for student progress.
Vidor High School also earned distinctions for mathematics, science and scoring in the top 25 percent for student progress.
Pine Forest Elementary in Vidor earned distinctions in mathematics and scoring in the top 25 percent for student progress.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) website says “STAAR isn’t the only way to evaluated student learning and it isn’t meant to tell the whole story.”
The test is given annually to students in the third grade through the end of middle school or junior high for the subjects of mathematics and reading. Some years the students will also take writing, science or social studies tests, depending on the grade levels.
In high school, the STAAR is an end-of-course test in the subjects of U.S. history, algebra, biology and English. TEA says the test questions are based on what is taught in the classrooms.
The scoring for standards is based on student progress, closing the performance gap, student achievement and postsecondary readiness.
