Juveniles in West Orange will still have to be at home or at least inside a residence by midnight. The City Council in West Orange renewed the city’s juvenile curfew ordinance Monday. Weekdays the curfew starts at 11:00 PM and weekends the curfew begins at midnight and every day the curfew ends at 6:00 AM. Police Chief Mike Stelly reported that there were ten violations by seven individuals of the curfew ordinance since it was last renewed.
The Council also called for a joint election with the West Orange Cove School District on May 6. Currently, only incumbents Mayor Roy McDonald and Alderperson Dr. Frances Droddy-Lopez have filed. Incumbent Carl Thibodeaux said Monday he plans to file Tuesday. Mayor McDonald indicated West Orange could cancel the election if there are no challengers for any of three seats. McDonald stated, “If we don’t have any opposition we can cancel the election, and hopefully we’ll have another one like that we’re able to cancel it.” Canceling the election would save the city about $5,000 according to the mayor. The deadline for filing is Friday at 5:00 PM.
In other business the City Council authorized the city to apply for a Homeland Security Grant. Clay Landry is currently attending the fire academy and should graduate in May. Landry was approved as a member of the West Orange Volunteer Fire Department by the City Council. Approval was also given by the council to allow the Orange County Mosquito Control District to conduct low altitude flights for mosquito abatement.
