Only a couple of food service places in Orange County had perfect scores during the first part of September, but most earned in the 90s. The lowest score was 82 and went to Kajun Seafood and wing, 1102 West Park Avenue in Orange. Health Inspector James Scales cited several problems and recommended more general cleaning.
The perfect places were First Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Orange and Sweet Life Ice Cream Parlor, 1601 16th Street in Orange.
Scales made pre-opening inspections for Blackbeard’s, 439 West Freeway in Vidor to operate a new food truck, and Natural Michoarana Ice Cream on Texas Avenue in Bridge City. He also gave a temporary license to a Subway at 3030 Highway 12 in Vidor. Scales reported the restaurant opened without obtaining a county food service permit.
Scores and demerits were:
Blue Bird Fish Camp off Simmons Drive in Orange: 99. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the storage room.
Barbecue Depot, 110 Old Highway 90 East in Vidor: 99. Light shields were needed.
Star Stop/In and Out, 100 West Freeway in Vidor: 99. Drinks were stored on the floor inside the walk-in cooler.
PK’s Grill, 1627 Strickland Drive in Pinehurst: 96. Raw chicken was stored improperly inside the reach-in coolers, dates were needed on products inside the reach-in coolers and freezers.
K-Dan’s Super Foods Deli, 9604 FM 105 in Orangefield: 96. The front cooler was not keeping the proper temperature; the Vent-a-Hood and areas around fryers, floors, walls and ceilings needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease.

Kroger Deli, 1600 16th Street in Orange: 95. Walk-in cooler was not keeping proper temperatures. Inspector found several flies and gnats. Storage shelves, floors and walls throughout deli needed to be cleaned of old foods. A broken dishwasher needed to be repaired or discarded.
Kroger, 1600 16th Street in Orange: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some dating back to 2014, from shelves. Inspector found a couple of dented cans. Store had ice build-up in both back walk-in freezers. Milk walk-in cooler had damaged floor tiles.
Lom’s Seafood, 2507 MacArthur Drive in West Orange: 94. Foods (shrimp) inside the reach-in freezer needed to be covered. Store did not have a certified food manager. Floor tiles were damaged and needed to be repaired. Inspector recommended cleaning the back and front storage rooms of rubbish and old equipment.
Sunset Grove Country Club, 2900 West Sunset Drive in Orange: 94. Bags of flour were left open on storage shelves. Inspector found several gnats. the Vent-Hood and area around fryers needed to be cleaned of grease and old foods. Back storage area needed to be cleaned and organized. Walls at the three-compartment sink had black mold and needed to be cleaned and sanitized. The outside of the walk-in cooler and freezer needed to be repaired.
Texas Country Store, 7411 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 93. Inspector pulled several expired foods from shelves. The inside of the ice machine and Icee machined needed to be cleaned of mold. Back storage room needed to be cleaned and organized. Baseboards were missing throughout the store. Missing or damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced.
On Your Way Valero, 3030 Highway 12 in Vidor: 92. Burritos and foods sitting inside the food warmer were at unsafe temperatures. Owner threw foods away. Vent above fryers and grill was missing. Drinks were stored on the floors inside the walk-in cooler and on sales floor.
Donut Palace, 1875 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 90. Boudain, sausage and egg were not at proper temperatures. Store had no record of time for holding boudain, sausage and egg. Dates were needed on products. Storage shelves, food containers, floors and walls needed to be cleaned of old foods and grease. Floor tiles were missing at the three-compartment sink.
Lucky Wok, 1803 16th Street in Orange: 89. Eggrolls were at improper temperatures. Restaurant was storing foods inside metal cans in the walk-in cooler. Front cooler was not working properly with some vegetables inside. Dates were needed on products. Employee food and drinks were stored on prep table.
Kajun Seafood and Wing, 1102 West Park Avenue in Orange: 82. Shrimp fried rice and sliced raw onions were not at proper temperatures. Foods were stored inside metal cans inside coolers. Foods needed to be covered. Employee was not using sanitizer for clean dishes. Dates were needed on products. Plastic grocery bags were used to store food. Equipment floors and walls throughout restaurant needed to be cleaned of old foods, dirt and trash. Inspector recommended more general cleaning.
