Only two of 26 food businesses had perfect scores during inspections during the last half of September. However, 12 of those had scores in the 90s.
Orange County Health Inspector James Scales gave the perfect scores to the Econolodge in Bridge City and the Best Western Plus in Vidor. He also made one pre-opening inspection without a score for Mi Casa Mexican Grill on Strickland Drive in Pinehurst. Two inspections, the Gateway Travel Plaza and the Spindletop Restaurant on Interstate 10 in Vidor had inspections for changes of ownership. Those two also had no scores.
The lowest score was an 81 and went to Happy Donuts on North Main Street in Vidor. The store was cited for having eggs, sausage and boudain at improper temperatures. Also, the business was storing raw dough inside a bucket that once held wind fresh laundry detergent.

Valero Kwick Stop, 1427 Strickland Drive in Orange: 97. The inside of the cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned. Broken floor tiles in the back storage area needed to be replaced.
Peggy’s on the Bayou, 2682 East Roundbunch Road in Bridge City: 97. Faucet at the hand-washing sink was dripping water. Pipes under the three-compartment sink were dripping water into a bucket and needed to be repaired.
Wright’s Barbecue Catering, 1096 North Main Street in Vidor: 97. The inside of the walk-in cooler and the walls in the prep room needed to be cleaned.
Tracy Seafood and Wind, 715 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 96. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be dated.
Donut Hole, 1613 16th Street in Orange: 95. Sausage, boudain and eggs found at unsafe temperatures.
Popeye’s Chicken, 952 North Main Street in Vidor: 94. Faucets were dripping water at the base and needed to be repaired. Inspector found missing floor grout and tiles throughout the business. Floors and equipment needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Express Mart, 20871 Highway 62 South in Orange: 94. Several gnats were found at the drink station. Air vents and returns needed to be cleaned of dust build-up. Dead insects needed to be cleaned out of light shields. The inside of the storage cabinets needed to be cleaned of old syrup.
DuPont Cafeteria/CBS Catering: 93. Employee drinks found without lids and straws. The outside of all storage shelves and equipment needed to be cleaned. DuPont had a 97 for storage shelves rusted and the area behind the fryers needed to be cleaned.
Sonic, 11786 Highway 62 North in Mauriceville: 93. Foods inside the reach-in freezers needed to be covered. Floors, especially in the kitchen area near the fryers, needed to be cleaned. The inside of the reach-in coolers needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Nolan Food Store, 585 Interstate 10 West in Vidor: 93. Foods inside the cooler needed to be labeled and dated. An ice scoop was found on top of boxes of syrup. The cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned.
Senor Toro, 2308 Lutcher Drive in Orange: 91. A couple of dead roaches were found. Faucets were dripping water at the bases and needed to be repaired. The inside of the coolers and freezers, plus the walls and ceilings, needed to be cleaned of old foods.
Sunrise Donuts, 2830 Western Avenue in West Orange: 91. Boudain, egg and sausage were at unsafe temperatures. Store was using the same pan liners to bake kolaches.
Best Price Motel, 2610 Interstate 10 West in Orange: 89. Sausage was at unsafe temperatures. Several gnats were at the dish sinks. Storage cabinets and equipment needed to be cleaned.
Schnitzel, 950 South Main Street in Vidor: 87. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be dated. Towels were needed at the hand-washing sink. Restaurant did not have a certified food manager on staff. The area around the grill and fryers needed to be cleaned.
Homsi’s, 7247 Interstate 10 East in Orange: 86. Hair restraints were needed. Employee was using a cell phone in the kitchen. The restaurant is storing cracklin’s inside a cardboard box without a liner. Towels were needed at the hand-washing sink. The area around the fryers needed to be cleaned, along with the floors throughout the restaurant. Air vents and returns needed to be cleaned. Water was dripping from ceiling tiles inside the kitchen. The drive-through window was not closing and needed to be repaired.
Kwick Stop Valero, 2000 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 86. Store name and address were needed on all bags of ice being sold. Inspector pulled several expired foods, some back to 2014, from the shelves. Gaskets needed to be replaced on the coolers. Several dead roaches were found. Damaged ceiling tiles needed to be replaced.
Denny’s, 7112 Interstate 10 West in Orange: 86. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be dated. The front reach-in cooler was holding water and needed to be repaired. The entire kitchen, including floors, vents above the fryers and storage shelves, needed to be cleaned. A couple of cleaned dishes still had old food on them. Broken floor tiles in the kitchen needed to be repaired.
Raceway, 500 Texas Avenue in Bridge City: 85. Hair restraints were needed. The store name and address were needed on bags of ice being sold. Store had hot water problems with the water being only hot enough for hand-washing. Mold was on drink dispensers. Outside of equipment needed to be cleaned.
Donut Palace, 950 South Main Street in Vidor: 85. Sausage, egg and boudain were at unsafe temperatures. Shop was using the same pan liners to bake kolaches. Sliced ham was defrosting inside the hand-washing sink. The walls and the inside of the cappuccino machine needed to be cleaned.
Crystal Seafood, 1609 16th Street in Orange: 83. Foods inside the coolers and freezers needed to be dated and covered. Restaurant did not have sanitizer. No certified food manager was on staff. The vents and the area above the fryers needed to be cleaned. Outside of all equipment needed to be cleaned.
Happy Donuts, 1081 North Main Street in Vidor: 81. Eggs, sausage and boudain were at unsafe temperatures. Foods inside the cooler and freezer needed to be dated. Raw dough was stored inside a plastic bucket for “Wind Fresh” laundry detergent. Gaskets on the reach-in coolers needed to be replaced. Vents above the fryers needed to be cleaned. Floors and walls throughout the store needed to be cleaned of old food and dirt.
