Phillip Clark was spray painting dozens of wooden crosses laying flat on grass next to The Palms Event Center. He’s one of the volunteers with Little White Crosses Orange County, a group building, constructing and giving away crosses.
Sonia Smith and her husband, Eric, live in Orangefield and have a ministry for the homeless. She said after the nativity was moved from Orange City Hall in December, they wanted a way for Christians to show solidarity with their faith.
“We as Christians have to stand up. We have to stand together,” she said.
The Smiths live in Orangefield and their children helped them build and paint the first crosses. Their effort was so popular that volunteers and donors have chipped in to pay for the lumber and paint. Volunteers have also helped build and paint the crosses.
Clark and his brother, Hiram, of H.K. Clark and Sons construction in Bridge City, are among the volunteers. Smith said they brought a commercial spray paint machine that has helped the production.
“Obviously, we can’t do this without donors and volunteers,” Smith said in front of piles and stacks of painted and unpainted crosses.
The cross production project has moved to The Palms Event Center on westbound Interstate 10 near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Smith said Marcy Messer and her father donated the use of the building and grounds.
Anyone may go by The Palms and pick up free crosses. More information about getting a cross or volunteering is available through the Facebook page Little White Crosses Orange County.
