The West Orange-Cove school board has sold the old administration building, Oates Elementary and the former middle school on Western Avenue in West Orange. All three have been closed and unused.
The non-profit group Brazoria County Alternative Academy bought Oates and the Western Avenue property and was the only bidder.
Oates, at 900 Newton Street in West Orange, brought a price of $13,000.
The Western Avenue school, which was built in the 1950s as West Orange High School, was sold for $14,000. The deal includes almost 10 acres of land plus the Carl Godwin Auditorium.
West Orange-Cove is keeping the property with the track.
The non-profit group was the only bidder on the two schools.
St. James Missionary Baptist Church bought the former administration building at 505 15th Street in Orange for $80,000. The Brazoria County Alternative Academy bid $10,000 for the building.
The alternative academy’s website says the group provides employment assistance and supervision for physically and mentally disabled adults ages 18 and older.
The non-profit is based in Angleton and serves 10 counties, including Jefferson, Harris and Galveston counties.
The school district has continued to pay for heating and cooling in the buildings to protect them from mold and deterioration. The sales will save the district the energy and yard maintenance costs, district officials said.
