Tropical Storm Harvey was an unwelcome guest when it visited Southeast Texas in August. It was especially unwelcome at the Texas Travel Information Center in Orange. The staff shutdown the travel information center early on Tuesday, August 29, because of the threat from Harvey. The information center run by the Texas Department of Transportation has been closed to the public since then. The center’s supervisor Manuel Ramon said water covered the parking lot for more than two weeks. Most of the 650-foot boardwalk behind the Travel Information Center was also under water, but was not structurally damaged. Fortunately, the center itself was above the water so there was no damage to it. Ramon indicated the last three weeks have been spent by the staff cleaning the grounds and the boardwalk. Ramon and his staff began welcoming visitors to Texas once again Monday, October 16.
