A group of youth spent the first day of their Thanksgiving holiday week making blankets for children in the Child Protective Services.
The Orange Camp Fire Council held its first youth service day Monday for students ages 12 and older. “We’re trying to teach children to get involved with the community,” said Camp Fire Director Charlotte Alford. “This is a way they can help.”
The kids spent the day at the Camp Fire office in the Old Orange Historic District. They made fleece blankets to be given to children who are going into foster care. Alford said some children have to be taken at all hours and a snuggly blanket can help keep them warm.
They also created a lending library from books donated to the youth organization. Alford said the library is open to the community.
Besides the work, “we mixed in some fun,” Alford said.
Camp Fire plans to make Community Service Day an annual Thanksgiving week event. Another day will be set in December and the kids will make items to take to nursing homes. Anyone wanting more information can call the Camp Fire office at 409-883-8841.
