Thanks to a young man from Vidor, one of our National Birds is back in the wild.
Back in March, Bryson McCoy of Vidor was in his kayak in the Neches River when he noticed a bald eagle struggling in the water. McCoy said, “I sent a video to my mom and she came down there. I stayed with it about an hour as we waited for the game warden to show up.”
The eagle was transported to the Houston SPCA Wildlife Center where they located a fishing hook lodged in the muscle of one wing, rendering him unable to fly.
The eagle would undergo surgery to remove the hook followed by weeks of intensive after care. The large beautiful bird regained strength and mobility in the Center’s Outdoor Flight Complex until he was ready to reclaim the sky.
That day was Monday, April 21 as McCoy and members of his family, members of the SPCA, and Game Warden Phillip LeDoux were on hand to see the majestic bird released near the area he was found. “It makes me feel pretty good that I found it, but it makes me feel better to watch it fly away and land in a tree,” McCoy said.
