For two quarters last week the West Orange-Stark Mustangs were challenged by a very good Silsbee team, but the Mustangs shored up some defensive holes in the second half and remain undefeated on the season. Coach Cornel Thompson realizes West Orange-Stark has another tough battle this week with the Richmond Foster Falcons.
Thompson states the Falcons also run the Spread just like Silsbee and spread the field with some excellent receivers including Evan Fairs and Chandler Speights. Richmond Foster is a Class 5A school with 60 players on its roster. The Falcons have size, speed, and quickness according to Thompson. The coach says it will be a very difficult test for the Mustangs, but win or lose they will gain something out of this contest.
Richmond Foster may not have any standouts on defense, but Coach Thompson believes the Falcons are still very good on the defensive side of the ball. Thompson compares Foster’s 4-3 Defense to Port Neches-Groves in that the Falcons use a pressure defense that comes at you every snap with numerous stunts and are very athletic with a lot of quickness. It is going to be a very difficult contest Thompson predicts.
Despite the win last week at Silsbee, Thompson knows mistakes kept the game close with the Tigers, and he wants the Mustangs to correct those errors in order to be able to stay unbeaten against Richmond Foster this week. Thompson chastises the Mustangs tackling in the first half of the Silsbee game and bemoans two costly blocks in the back on punt returns that cost West Orange-Stark great field position that could have helped put the Tigers away in the second quarter if not for the penalties. Coach Thompson admits the Mustangs cannot afford to make those types of sloppy plays against these people.
The West Orange-Stark Mustangs play the Richmond Foster Falcons Saturday evening at Baytown’s Stallworth Stadium and live on KOGT.
