The West Orange-Stark Mustangs opened the season battling the weather and the Nederland Bulldogs. The weather won as the game was shortened with the Bulldogs leading the Mustangs at the time the game was called because of lightning.
Coach Cornel Thompson missed the game because of a bout with the Coronavirus, but he summed up the result for West Orange-Stark as just some hurt feelings. The Mustangs made too many mistakes shooting themselves in the foot with false starts. The offense struggled as a result facing multiple second and longs because of the penalties.
Overall, Thompson thought the WO-S defense played fair for the first game of the season. A late interception return by the Mustangs was called back by a penalty. Thompson commented, “I really felt like we had an excellent chance to win the football game.”
This week the Mustangs play their crosstown rivals the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears. Thompson reviewed the offense for the Bears is the Spread under new Coach Eric Peevey.
The Bears have a talented quarterback in Ashton Landry. He has impressed Thompson with an ability to run and throw the football.
The running back De’Marion Morris maybe small in stature, but is big on talent. Morris had three touchdowns in the season opener for Little Cypress-Mauriceville.
Those are the two leaders for the Bears on offense which the Mustangs’ defense will have to slow down. “They are pretty good operators, Coach Peevey’s done a great job with the program to this point, and they’re coming off a victory credit to the Bears, so it’s going to be a heck of a football game I hope,” Thompson expressed.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville has a new defensive coordinator in John Davis, and the Bears have switched to the 4-3 alignment. Coach Thompson complimented Coach Davis on his work with the Bears’ defense.
West Orange-Stark struggled to put points on the board in Week 1, and Coach Thompson said it will be tough to score on Little Cypress-Mauriceville this week which is led by Amier Washington at defensive end. Jose Molina at defensive tackle helps anchor the middle of the defense.
The Bears swarmed the ball carrier well and ran to the ball good in their first game Thompson observed from the film. Thompson stated, “I’ve really been impressed with them.”
Friday night will be the Orange Bowl between the Mustangs and the Bears. Thompson analyzed the keys for West Orange-Stark to win the annual rivalry game is cutting out the penalties on offense and executing better in all phases of the game.
Early in the game with Nederland the Mustangs did get their running game going, but penalties kept moving them back. The coach wants West Orange-Stark to come more mentally prepared for the game against Little Cypress-Mauriceville than it did in the opener.
Decades of coaching has shown Coach Thompson that the week between the first game and the second game is when teams show the most improvement. “We’ve got to improve in a hurry or we’ll be O and 2,” Thompson concluded.
