Saturday was the Annual West Orange-Stark Baseball Alumni Legend’s Weekend – Honoring our Past and Supporting our Future.
There was an Alumni game vs. the Mustangs at 1pm. Before that, The Wall of Honor Ceremony was held as Bruce Aven was installed on the WOS Baseball Honor Wall.
Aven was a standout at WOS in baseball and football. He earned a scholarship to Lamar. A four-year letter winner (91-94) for the Cardinals, Aven won the Al Vincent Award after hitting .380 with 13 home runs and driving in 67 runs in 1993. His efforts on the field led to a first-team all-conference honor as the Cardinals won the Sun Belt Conference Tournament title. He was inducted into the Cardinal Hall of Honor Class of 2022.
Following his collegiate career, Aven played off an on for five seasons in Major League Baseball playing for the Cleveland Indians, Florida Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers (’97-02). He finished his career with a .273 batting average.
He would then go into coaching where he won a State Championship in 2012 with American Heritage Private School in Florida. He would go on to become the schools Athletic Director and this season he will also have the baseball hat on as he returns to coaching.
Unfortunately Aven and his family did not attend the ceremony. Tony Dallas, who is already on the wall, was in attendance. Also former Mustangs Jack Dallas and Payton Robertson, who will start the season in the minor leagues this year were at the game. Chad Dallas would’ve been there but is already at Spring Training with the Toronto organization. Aven joins Dallas, coaches Ronnie Anderson and JB Bearden, Andre Robertson, and Roderick Robertson.
