The Mustang defense was the star of the game Friday night as they held Mexia to 118 yards of offense in a 17-3 win in Area Round playoff action from Conroe.
The offense was hampered with the loss of quarterback Chaka Watson to a hip injury in the first quarter as they managed a 10-0 lead at the half scoring off of two Black Cat turnovers. Watson scored in the first on a 16 yard run and Chad Dallas kicked a 17 yard field goal.
“I wasn’t happy with our play tonight,” said Coach Cornel Thompson. “We didn’t block or tackle well. I have to call a timeout when we’re fourth and goal at the one yard line because I’m not sure we can score. So we kick a field goal.”
Watson did come back to play in the second half but he just handed the ball off, only having to run once when the snap was bobbled. He’s expected to play against Madisonville, who defeated Lorena 45-35. The game is scheduled for Friday at Texan Drive Stadium at 7pm according to Thompson.
