It was another bi-district blowout for West Orange-Stark Thursday night. Coach Cornel Thompson’s Mustangs routed the Huntington Red Devils 56-7 at Memorial Stadium in Beaumont.
West Orange-Stark (8-1) has rolled over opposing teams in the bi-district round the last six years, outscoring their opponents 386-10. To its credit Huntington (1-10) is the first team during that span to score a touchdown against the Mustangs.
It took West Orange-Stark six plays and just over two minutes to take the lead which would be the closest the game would ever be. Huntington actually won the toss and deferred to the second half.
Taking over at the 50 the Mustangs got first down runs from substitute quarterback Jayson Zeigler, Junior and Andre Thomas, Junior to setup first-and goal at the Huntington four. Elijah Gales scored on the next play. Angel Ibarra made the score 7-0 with 2:19 gone in the first period.
That was just the start of the rout. Gales would score the next two touchdowns on long runs of 42 and 51 yards. West Orange-Stark led 21-0 with 4:15 to play in the first quarter. Gales only played the first quarter on offense yet still gained 109 yards on five carries, three of the them for scores.
Huntington showed a long passing game that resulted in two big gains. Red Devils’ quarterback Garrett Chancelor connected with Ayden Colbert for 38 yards, but that drive stalled. Chancelor than found Austin Harris on the next drive for 48 yards to give Huntington a first down at the Mustangs’ 34.
The duo of Chancelor and Harris teamed up for another first down pass to the 21. The Red Devils opted to go for it on fourth down instead of trying a field goal. The Mustangs’ Dontrey McClain proved it was an unwise decision as he intercepted Chancelor’s next pass and returned it 90 yards for a touchdown as the first quarter expired.
Backups played most of the remaining three quarters. Hykeim Taylor scored on a 7-yard run. Thomas intercepted a pass and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown. After a third Mustang interception by Jadon Jones, the game officials started a running clock with still five and a half minutes to go in the first half.
Terry Harris made a 33-yard run on his only carry of the night with just under four minutes left in the second quarter to make the score 49-0. The half would see no more scoring.
The two teams exchanged touchdowns in the second half with the clock running throughout. The Mustangs scored on a 24-yard run by Jamaal Shaw as the third period concluded. Paulino Santos kicked his third point-after of the game to make the score 56-0.
The Red Devils drove 70 yards using 12 plays against a Mustang defense of second teamers. Andrew Faulk scored from the one to give Huntington a consolation touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Eleven different Mustangs ran the ball in the game. Shaw gained 34 yards on five carries. Dakarion Judge picked up 20 yards on three carries after replacing Zeigler at quarterback who gained 26 yards. West Orange-Stark had 287 yards of total offense in the game completing just one pass for 13 yards.
