The Woodville Eagles did what the Orangefield Bobcats typically do best, and that is run the ball, control the clock and take advantage of opportunities when presented. Woodville dominated both sides of the ball for a 41-7 victory Friday night at F. L. McClain Stadium in Orangefield to remain undefeated for the season.
It was a tale of two-halves on Friday night, and neither one worked out to the benefit of the Bobcats.
This was not to be the Bobcats night as the offense fumbled on the second play of the game and Woodville made Orangefield pay with a 41-yard drive that took approximately four minutes off the clock as Kris Taylor darted in from two-yards out for a quick 6-0 lead.
Orangefield responded with its best-sustained drive of the game, as the offense marched the ball 67 yards while consuming more than seven minutes off the clock. Facing third and 10 from their own 32 yard line, Bobcats quarterback rolled right and avoided the Eagles defense as he lobbed a 22 yard completion to Andrew Hoyland at the Woodville 46 yard line. Kress finished the drive as time expired in the first quarter with a 1-yard quarterback sneak and a 7-6 lead.
Woodville answered quickly on the next drive as the Eagles only needed five plays to move 61 yards for its next score, which was capped off by 10-yard run by Ivan Lockhart. Lockhart finished with 13 carries for 164 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Orangefield was poised to respond but misfortune struck again as the Eagles defense recovered another fumble at the Bobcats 30-yard line. This time the Woodville offense consumed time off the clock as it moved the ball down the short field before Taylor scored again to put the Eagles up 22-7 at the break.
The second-half saw each team trade punts several times, but it was obvious the Eagles running game was finally wearing down the Orangefield defense. Facing third and one from the Bobcats 31-yard line, Lockhart sprinted left around the end and outran the Bobcats defense to the end zone for his second touchdown. On the next Woodville possession, Lockhart needed just one play as he ran to his right, hit the sideline and again outran the Orangefield defense to pay dirt.
Mason Gonzalez spent the majority of the second half at quarterback for Orangefield and tried to lead the Bobcats to a comeback, but each time he dropped back to pass he was scrambling to avoid the Eagles pass rush.
The turnover bug struck Orangefield one last time as Eagles defender Tristen Mitchell scooped up a loose ball and rumbled 46 yards for another Woodville touchdown to seal the game at 41-7 with only 45 seconds remaining.
Orangefield (1-2) will travel to Little Cypress next Friday to take on the Battlin’ Bears as LC-M celebrates homecoming. LC-M (1-2) earned its first victory on Friday night with a 40-20 win over Hardin-Jefferson. Woodville (3-0) returns home next Friday and will host the Liberty Panthers (3-0).
