A 38-year-old woman has been arrested for capital murder in connection with the death of a 5-year-old girl Friday. Orange Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the child died of blunt force trauma to her head. Investigators are trying to determine the object that was used to hit her.
Enmon said the child was Daviana Landry of Thibodaux, Louisiana.
Brenika Rechelle Lott of Orange was charged and arrested for capital murder Monday. Enmon said the child had been staying with Lott, who is a friend of the child’s family. Lott’s son is now with Child Protective Services, he said.
First responders were called at noon Friday to 712 10th Street because of an unresponsive child. Enmon said when the Orange Fire Department medical reponders arrived, they saw a woman performing CPR on the child, who was already deceased.
The investigator with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Jefferson County Crime Lab were also at the scene Friday working with Orange police.
Capital murder carries the death penalty as punishment. The Texas Penal Code allows a capital murder charge in connection with the death of a child younger than 10.
