Pinehurst Police Chief Fred Hanauer said information from the public led him to the woman who was caught on surveillance video taking donated items from a charity. The chief said she will face a Class C misdemeanor theft charge because the blanket and mirror she admitted to taking did not have a large value. The woman has not been arrested and charged, though she talked with the chief.
The Class C misdemeanor will be filed in Pinehurst Municipal Court. Punishment for the misdemeanor is a maximum fine of $500 with no jail.
Chief Hanauer said the woman first told him she donated items, then changed her mind and went back to get them. However, after watching more video recordings and talking to another donor, the chief determined the woman took items donated by someone else.
The charity is Friends Helping Friends on 35th Street in Pinehurst.
