The City of West Orange approved a contract with a new garbage collection vendor Monday. Piney Woods Sanitation will collect the city’s residential garbage for five years under the contract beginning March of 2017. Piney Woods was one of three companies seeking the contract with West Orange.
Mayor Roy McDonald and a committee reviewed the companies’ bids separately and then came together to compare their findings. Mayor McDonald explained that he and the committee then met with each of the three vendors to negotiate all details of their bids except the actual price.
The mayor informed that Piney Woods had the lowest cost per customer, did not adhere to the consumer price index thus would not be raising the cost every time the CPI is increased, and Piney Woods would also absorb all fuel surcharges. McDonald concluded, “It was just an overall consensus of the committee that it was best for the citizens of our city to venture out with a new waste collection.” Mayor McDonald did thank Waste Management for its years of service in waste collection for the City of West Orange.
The City Council turned down a request from the West Orange-Stark Project Safe Graduation for a 5K LOVE Run in February of next year. McDonald said safety issues are why the request was not approved. Police Chief Mike Stelly when asked if he would have enough police officers to serve as security for the proposed route of the run on Newton and Burnet streets stated he did not. McDonald added that for the safety of the students the city council could not approve a run on those particular streets.
Monday’s meeting will be the only city council meeting in November. The West Orange City Council’s next scheduled meeting will be Monday, December 12.
