William Carl “Corky” Underwood Jr. was born June 22, 1928 to Willam and Gertrude Underwood near Charleston, West Virginia and went to be with the Lord on October 29, 2018. Corky served throughout his lifetime beginning when he joined the merchant marines at an early age and subsequently the U.S. Army in 1946. Answering the call of duty, Corky served in the Korean War from 1950-1953. His service did not end after his honorable discharge from the military, but continued through his work as Post Commander for the VFW Post 2775 in Orange for many years. Simultaneously, Corky went to work and eventually retired from DuPont.
An avid fisherman, Corky made many trips to Mexico in the 1970’s and was one of the first property owners at Toledo Bend Reservoir where he lived until his passing. Always active, Corky and wife Lucy traveled to Oregon for many summers and enjoyed countless trips between Louisiana and the Texas Valley with their friends in the Cruisin’ Cajun RV Club.
Corky was preceded in death by his first beloved wife Anne in 1990, his daughter Sara, and his brother Richard. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Lucy, son Dale, sister Betty, and brother Gordon, as well as 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren who lovingly knew him as Pop Pot.
A memorial service to honor Corky will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 1pm at the Community Club of Toledo Bend in Burkeville, TX.
