Born in Hemphill, Texas, on April 25, 1934, he was the son of Clarence David Hammock and Eleanor Gates Hammock. Odell lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a continuous quest for knowledge. Odell proudly served his country during the Korean War, demonstrating unwavering commitment and bravery. Following his military service, he transitioned to a fulfilling career as an inspector at Gulf Coast Machine/Supply in Beaumont, where his attention to detail and strong work ethic left a lasting impression on those around him. A true jack-of-all trades, Odell had a remarkable ability to “tinker,” viewing every challenge as an opportunity to innovate. With duct tape and rope in hand, he could fix just about anything, making him a dependable friend and neighbor, always ready to lend a hand. In his personal life, Odell found joy in a variety of hobbies and interests that showcased his adventurous spirit. He relished weekends spent fishing and camping, where he found peace in the great outdoors. His passion for gardening flourished, allowing him to cultivate beautiful plants and vegetables. Additionally, he was an ardent reader, always seeking new stories and knowledge to further enrich his life. Odell was also a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4759 in Starks, Louisiana, where his friendships with fellow veterans reflected his strong sense of community and loyalty. His grandchildren were the joy in his life, they helped him be the gentler man they called “Poppy”. His legacy of service, kindness, and resourcefulness will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
