What was supposed to be a tight battle last week for West Orange-Stark against the Jasper Bulldogs turned into a romp for the Mustangs, 53-0. Another tough contest is anticipated this week as West Orange-Stark travels to Silsbee to play the undefeated Tigers.
Coach Cornel Thompson says Silsbee’s Spread Offense is led by quarterback Dontre Thomas. Thompson adds that the Tiger’s offensive coordinator’s son Kolton Mackey at a slot receiver is a frequent and dangerous target for passes from Thomas. The Tigers like to throw the ball vertically down the field and stretch opponents’ defenses both horizontally and vertically. Thompson admits Silsbee is one of the few teams that match the Mustangs’ athleticism on a football field.
Defensively the Tigers have linebacker Desmond Armstrong and cornerback Tarvoris Brooks who are just two of the standouts on that side of the ball. Coach Thompson analyzes the Silsbee defense. Thompson points out the Tigers run a mirror defense to West Orange-Stark in their 50-Defense, and frequently view film on the Mustangs and ask questions to determine what makes the Chain Gang so tough in its 50 look. Armstrong is their bell-cow on the defense, and traditionally Silsbee has always had good athletes so Thompson predicts it should be an excellent contest.
Coming off the lopsided win over Jasper the Mustangs are moving in the direction Thompson wants them to go with district action still a month away. Coach Thompson told the Mustangs at the half of the Jasper game that he wanted to run the football after halftime. The Mustangs threw the ball only once in the second half. West Orange-Stark was able to move the football on the ground and Thompson was happy how the offensive line performed, how the running backs hit the hole, the fact a number of players scored, and he was pleased with that offensive part of the victory.
Friday night it will be a battle of two unbeaten teams as the West Orange-Stark Mustangs match up with the Silsbee Tigers.
