Deweyville graduate and Texas State student Brooke Wilhelm, participated in a workshop that assisted immigrants with the last step of obtaining their U.S. citizenship process. Wilhelm writes, As members of Enactus, several students volunteered with American Gateways to help and or translate the NR400 forms needed for immigrants to continue with getting their U.S. citizenship rights legally.
In San Antonio, TX, Palo Alto College was kind enough to host the workshop that allowed Enactus, American Gateways, attorneys, and community volunteers to assist the immigrants with their NR400 forms. The NR400 forms are twenty six pages long and are immensely personal. The forms are the last step standing between the immigrant and their full U.S. citizenship rights. In the morning all of the volunteers went through training, gave by one of the immigration attorneys. We were taught the legalities of the forms and how much that we were allowed to help with. This experience was eye opening. We were able to meet and share stories with these families and learn about their journeys. Enactus has been working on translating resources for the immigrants, we provided them with
several printed constitution books, and we also paid for one of the families’ process cost for the screening and forms. The cost can roughly be around $700-$900. It was an honor to be of a service to the people who see value in the United States and want to be a part of our nation legally. This is only one type of project that Enactus works hard on. We aim to change the world by completing projects that capitalize the triple bottom line: people, profit, and planet.
