Candidates to fill vacated District 2 seat on the Orange City Council will have until Monday, May 8, to file. The election will be Saturday, June 17.
The Orange City Council Friday called for the special election to replace Dr. Wayne Guidry. Guidry, who had been an administrator at the West Orange-Cove school district, took the job of superintendent with the Hubbard school district. He officially resigned when he started his new job last week.
Candidates must be qualified under city rules and live within single-member District 2, which is mainly the Little Cypress area north of Interstate 10. Filing will be in the city secretary’s office during regular business hours.
Orange City Manager Dr. Shawn Oubre told the council a lawyer with the Germer law firm advised the city to assure the state election code and city charter regulations were coordinated. The city charter for the single-member district plan requires a special election to replace a seat with two years left on a three-year term. Guidry had served only one year of his current term.
Only registered voters living in the district are eligible to vote for the seat. Early voting will run weekdays from June 5 to June 13 at the Orange Public Library. The only poll open on Election Day will be at Little Cypress Intermediate School on Allie Payne Road.
