
The Sunday afternoon shooting on 11th Street in Orange appears to be drug related. Orange Police Detective Captain Robert Enmon said the 44-year-old victim was sitting on his sofa inside the house when he was shot at 2:50 p.m. A bullet, believed to be from a rifle, hit him in the right leg.
The victim mentioned to investigators that “people in Orange will shoot you” for owing money on methamphetamine, Enmon said. The man was taken by Acadian Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. He was not cooperating with police on Monday.
The house where the man was shot was on 11th Street east of the railroad tracks near Curtis Avenue.
Sunday night, a man was attacked with a baseball bat at a residence in the Navy Park neighborhood. Though he was bleeding, he refused medical treatment from Acadian Ambulance Service.
The 31-year-old man called 911 about 11 p.m. to the 100 block of Knox Avenue. The patrol officer reported the man had blood on his shirt and pants, plus blood coming from his front teeth. The man told the officer he had gone to a residence and when he arrived, three people attacked him. He knew two of the men.
Orange police during the weekend made three arrests involving possession of methamphetamine. One was made in the Brownwood neighborhood late Friday night after someone called police to complain about the noise from a riding mower on the street.
Police went to the 2300 block of Eighth Street at 11:12 p.m. to investigate the noise. The patrol officer reported seeing a man riding a John Deere tractor mower turn into a driveway. When the man saw the police vehicle, he reached into his pocket. The officer said he saw the man appear to throw something into the yard.
Another police officer found a blue container with a clear rock of meth in the yard. Police said the man was also wanted on two misdemeanor warrant charges from Orange. 48-year-old Tommy Mack Jr. now faces a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance.
A Louisiana woman was arrested Friday morning in a hotel parking lot for a third degree felony charge of possession of a methamphetamine plus a misdemeanor charge for pills. Two other people in her SUV, a man from Orange and a woman from Louisiana, were arrested for outstanding misdemeanor warrants.
Police reported they were checking the parking lot of the Executive Inn, 4301 27th Street at 11:17 a.m. Friday when they saw the SUV with four people sitting inside. Officers found a small amount of meth inside a zipped card case on a key chain on the gear shift. They also found several prescription pills in the vehicle, but could not determine who they belonged to. Pills were also found in a wallet.
The driver and owner of the SUV, Mandy Lynn Farrell of Holden, Louisiana, was arrested for third degree felony of possession of a controlled substance for the meth and a misdemeanor possession for pills.
A man stopped for riding a bicycle without lights was arrested for meth possession Saturday night on 16th Street. A patrol officer reported seeing the bike traveling on a sidewalk without lights about 10 p.m. and went to stop the rider for traffic violations.
However, when the patrol vehicle turned around, the bicyclist “then seemed to get in a hurry” and pedaled faster into a business parking lot, according to the officer. Police saw the man toss something and they later found a clear bag with meth. After the officers found the baggie, the man told officers he had a syringe in his pocket.
48-year-old Murray Shane Smith was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance.
A shoplifter at Flying J truckstop may get busted because he was trying to sell the items on the Internet. Orange police went to the store off Interstate 10 at Highway 62 Friday evening. An employee at the adjacent Denny’s told the truckstop manager she had seen the items for sale on a website.
Police reviewed store surveillance video and saw a man put several items in a bag and walk out. Detective Captain Robert Enmon said $217 worth of earphones, wireless headphones and Skullcandy earbuds were stolen. No arrests had been made as of Monday evening.
