The “Cardiac Cats” struck again Thursday night, as they seem to have a knack for dramatic endings, winning 16-8 in a nail biter. The 8th grade A-team remains undefeated on the season, improving to 6-0 behind a stingy defense and an unbelievable will to never give up and finish every game. The first play of the game, West Orange took it to the house for 97 yards and that would be all they were allowed. Ashton Sumrall, Matthew Johnson, Layne Reynolds, Kim Tsan, Logan Trero, and Rylan McAlpin were several of the stand-outs on defense who made huge play after huge play. This group had three fourth-down stands, including a huge fourth and goal play that proved to be the deciding factor of the game. Kyler Green took the opening kickoff back for a 52-yard touchdown, and then proceeded to punch in his two-point conversion that would tie the ball game at 8-8. After that, it was a stalemate until the offense found some footing. Mason Manning did what he does best and ran for a touchdown, which put the Bobcats up 16-8. The player of the night for the Bobcats was Easton Sprayberry, who had his best game of the year; throwing key blocks on offense and making huge tackles on defense. As part of his big night, Sprayberry also recovered a fumble which helped his team keep their district championship hopes alive.
The 7th and 8th grade combined B-team got their first victory of the season, winning an 8-6 dog fight. Emmanuel Zepeda scored the lone touchdown and 2-point conversion for the Cats, and that is all Coach Wilbur’s defense would need to win. Robert McKay timed the Mustangs’ snap count to perfection and made a living in their backfield. Kellen Hawthorne turned into a brick wall late in the fourth quarter, not allowing anything through or around, which sealed the deal for Coach Hoyt’s squad.
The 7th grade A-team lost a tough one, 48-6, against a Mustang squad that had several talented players on it. Although you could not see it in the score sheets, these Bobcats fought hard until the last second ticked off the clock. The lone touchdown for the Bobcats came in the form of a beautiful 62-yard pass from Carson Gonzales to Elijah Jones. Jones totaled over 100 yards receiving on the night which was one of the few bright spots on an offense that couldn’t get things going.
All three teams will be back in action next Thursday, as we travel across the Bayou to take on the Cardinals of Bridge City.
