After a week off due to inclement weather in Winnie, Texas last week it was finally the JV “Orange” team’s chance to play for the district title. Tuesday marked the first time all year that the Orange and White teams joined forces and it could not have come at a better time as the rival Buna Cougars traveled to Bobcat Country.
The already soggy surface at F.L. McClain Stadium did not get any help as a pretty good downpour hit as the teams were warming up. After a slight delay Buna kicked off to the Cats and Orangefield struggled to find their footing on the opening drive of the game. Fortunately, the defense was able to hold the cougars off and got the ball back over to the offense. On their next drive, the Bobcats took the ball down the field methodically, moving it all the way to the one yard line before fumbling an exchange that would leave the cougars with the ball inside of their own 5 yard line.
The Bobcat defense once again stood up, forcing a punt and the Orangefield offense got things going behind the nifty footwork of quarterback Hunter Reeves, and the tremendous hands of receiver Jaxon Agerton. Reeves punched in the first score of the game with just seconds left in the first half and the two point try was successful as Delcambre found Betros on a pass to the left to make the score 8-0 in favor of the good guys.
The second half started off a little shaky for the Bobcats as Buna put together a nice drive capped off by a long touchdown run. However, the defense managed to get a stop on the two-point try to maintain an 8 to 6 lead over the Cougars. Orangefield answered with a score from running back Hunter Block. Block had a strong night rushing as both he and quarterback Hunter Reeves were the two-headed ground attack that chewed through the Cougar defense all night long.
The next drive Buna was moving the rock again before Conner Kidd jumped on a fumble to give it back to his squad. Kidd had a great night leading the way with 8 tackles. After getting the ball back Hunter Block finished off the Cougars with a 41 yard dash down the right side to make it a 20-8 final score.
When the dust— rather, mud settled, the Bobcats Junior Varsity squad had defeated their northern foes en route to claiming the football program’s second football district championship in as many weeks. The future looks bright for Bobcat Football and be sure to come out and support the varsity as they travel to Buna for some Thursday Night Football tomorrow as things kickoff at 7:30.
