After a soggy afternoon and a few local cancellations the JV “White” Bobcats received the all clear to head west to face the Lumberton Raiders. Lumberton was sure to be looking for revenge after the 54 to 0 shellacking the Bobcats put on them in early October, so the boys knew they needed to be locked-in.
After warming up, the kickoff was delayed as no chain crew was present to help out the officials. In an effort to get folks home in time to trick or treat Coach Reed and an official retrieved the chains and were greeted by two long-time Bobcat faithful’s, Cody and Darren Bouillon. The father/son duo, along with Coach Pachuca set the chains and Wyatt Club kicked things off to get play underway.
After attempting an onside kick to start the game, the Raiders took the ball with good field position. Lumberton had a couple of decent runs, but dropped back to pass on third down and had defenders, Bryce Hooks and Max Sampson breathing down his neck. The duress caused the pass to fall short into the arms of linebacker Dacius Lylte. The Bobcat offense was set up with a short field and Bryce Hooks had a 25 yard run down the left side to the 4 yard line where Lytle capped off the drive with a touchdown. Orangefield trotted out their “kicking” team, but hit the Raiders with their typical fake as Delcambre took the snap and hit Keaton Beatros in the corner of the endzone for 2.Lumberton then promptly went three and out before punting the ball back to an eager Orangefield offense. The Cats took the ball right down the field after a nice 3rd down conversion on the feet of Lynkon Delcambre. After a few nice runs from Dacius Lytle, Hooks carried a sweep 15 yards around the right side for his first touchdown of the night. With the next play was a failed conversion try and the good guys were up 14-0 with 9 seconds left in the first quarter. The Raiders were once again held to a 3rd and long on the ensuing drive and heaved one up the Bobcat sideline where Keaton Betros came up with the second interception of the night for Orangefield. Betros had his number called on offense as well as the wideout caught a 35 yard bomb from Delcambre before stepping out at the 2 yard line. The next play was a quarterback sneak that put Orangefield ahead 20-0 to close out the first half of play.
Lumberton kicked off to start the 3rd quarter and the Bobcats did not waste any time before getting back on the board. Delcambre displayed his speed with a quarterback scamper that went for 47 yards and another touchdown on the first snap of the series. Lumberton, who finished with negative yardage on the night, were unable to put together any drives in the second half either being stifled at every turn by the defense.
The Bobcats needed a bailout play on 3rd and long on the next drive and went to their two-way workhorse once again. Bryce Hooks took the end around looking for a first down, but instead decided to go 60 yards to the house. The crafty Cats looked to run the same play for the extra point try, but this time Hooks lateraled to Betros who reversed field and found the quarterback, Lynkon Delcambre on a pass to make the score 34-0.
Midway through the third quarter and with Orangefield already routing the Raiders, Mason Boullion tipped a pass to himself before corralling it for an interception and return that put the Bobcats inside Lumberton’s 10 yard line. Boullion was rewarded for his efforts on the defensive side of the ball as he went in at quarterback and rushed for a touchdown and the 2 point conversion. After widening the margin the opponents asked to run the clock, but that did not mean the Cats were done making plays. Cornerback Chance Kyle had a nice pass breakup that was a near interception, receiver Tyler Harrison had a beautiful catch on a comeback route along the sideline, and safety Damion Kelley had an interception on the final play of the game.
When the buzzer sounded it marked the end of an outstanding season for the JV “White” Bobcats who finished the year with a 5-2 mark. As good as the Bobcats were on offense, the defense is what carried the team as they tallied 5 shutouts and allowed opponents a meager 5.7 points a game.
The Orange and White JV crews will combine forces next week in a home game that pits the Cats against their arch-nemeses, the Buna Cougars, in a battle for the district crown.
