Assistant District Attorney Krispen Walker has decided not to run for the position of 163rd state district judge.
She announced earlier this year she was going to run in the Republican primary for the seat being vacated by Judge Dennis Powell, who is retiring after 20 years. Walker has been assigned as the prosecutor in that court for 18 years.
She said she loves her job as a prosecutor because she can help victims and their families. “I felt like I was where I needed to be,” she said.
Walker has gained a reputation as a tough prosecutor getting long sentences for the guilty. In addition, she works with victims and their families through the criminal justice process.
“I feel like I’m doing a service and I’m an in-the-trenches kind of girl,” she said.
Lawyers Rex Peveto and Michael Catt have also announced they are running for 163rd District judge. Incumbent judges in Orange County rarely draw an election opponent.
Walker said Powell’s announced retirement created an opportunity and she believes she would be a good judge. Few people, though, get to work at a job they love, and she said she wants to stay with the district attorney’s office.
She thanks the people who were supporting her for the judgeship and wants to let them know she is not running before the campaign season begins. She had not started accepting campaign donations.
The party primary races will be Tuesday, March 3. The dates for candidates to file with county party chairs to run in the election are from November 9 through December 9.
